1. Introduction

Aging is one of the major risk factors of cardiovascular disease (CVD), and its progression has a significant impact on the life expectancy of the individual. In the present study, the effect of dietary interventions on the incidence of erectile dysfunction in men with type 2 diabetes mellitus was investigated. The present study was conducted in San Jose, Puerto Rico, to examine the effect of lifestyle changes, dietary intervention, and dietary supplementation on erectile dysfunction in men with type 2 diabetes mellitus. We also examined the effects of lifestyle changes on erectile function in men with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

2. Materials and Methods

We conducted a randomized, double-blind, parallel-arm, three-period crossover study in men with type 2 diabetes mellitus who were diagnosed with erectile dysfunction (ED) at the end of the 12-week treatment with sildenafil citrate (Viagra®) or placebo. The study protocol was approved by the institutional review boards of the three participating centers and was conducted by a local ethics committee. The study was performed in accordance with the guidelines of the Association for Research on Sexual Medicine and the Declaration of Helsinki. The study participants were randomly assigned to the following groups (n = 6): placebo (n = 5), sildenafil (n = 5), sildenafil (n = 5), sildenafil citrate (n = 5), sildenafil citrate (n = 5), and sildenafil citrate (n = 5). All participants had a baseline of at least six sexual intercourse sessions, and sexual activity was evaluated during the study. The treatment group received sildenafil (10 mg) or placebo for six weeks, while the other group received sildenafil (20 mg). The sildenafil and placebo groups were split into two groups (n = 6) by randomly mixing three groups, including the sildenafil group and sildenafil citrate group, and were then divided into two groups (n = 6) by the same procedure. The ED patients' ED profile at baseline and during the study period was evaluated using the Global Efficacy and Erectile Function-Improvement Index (GHIAEF) as the primary index of erectile function (the modified Erectile Function Domain or ED Domain score) at baseline, six weeks, and six months. The ED patients' ED profile at baseline and during the study period was evaluated using the International Index of Erectile Function-Erectile Function domain (IIEF-EF) score at baseline and six months. The IIEF-EF domain score was calculated using the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-EF), using the International Index of Erectile Function Total Score (IIEF-NT), the erectile function domain score, and the International Index of Erectile Function Performance domain score. The ED patients' ED profile at baseline and during the study period was evaluated using the IIEF-NT total score at baseline, six weeks, and six months. ED patients' ED profile at baseline and during the study period was evaluated using the ED Domain score at baseline and six months.

All patients' data were analyzed using the intention to treat (ITT) analysis, and data were presented as the mean ± standard deviation or median with interquartile ranges. Statistical analyses were conducted by using SPSS software version 23.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, United States). The level of significance was set at P ≤ 0.05.

3. Results

The prevalence of ED was high in the study group, and was about 5% in the placebo group. The prevalence of ED in the sildenafil group was about 5% in the sildenafil group, and the prevalence in the placebo group was about 3% in the sildenafil group.

Originally known as Sildenafil, Viagra has been shown to have a similar mechanism of action as other erectile dysfunction medications. It works by relaxing the smooth muscle in the penis, allowing for increased blood flow, and improving sexual performance.
